Virginia Early Intervention

Early Intervention Developmental Services

Helping children learn, grow, and participate in everyday life.

What It Means

Development happens within everyday life

Early Intervention supports eligible infants and toddlers with developmental delays or disabilities and their families. Developmental Services are family-centered and focus on helping children build functional skills through naturally occurring activities, routines, play, and interactions.

This is not traditional tutoring. Support is individualized around a child’s participation in daily life and the priorities identified with the family and Early Intervention team.

How Developmental Services Can Help

Communication

Supporting early communication, requesting, understanding, expression, and interaction.

Learning & Thinking

Supporting exploration, attention, early cognitive skills, problem-solving, and learning.

Social & Emotional Development

Supporting relationships, engagement, interaction, emotional development, and participation.

Play

Using meaningful play and everyday activities to create natural developmental learning opportunities.

Independence

Supporting adaptive skills, participation in routines, and developmentally appropriate independence.

Supporting The Whole Family

Caregivers are essential partners

Parents and caregivers are important participants in Early Intervention. The provider works collaboratively with the family, demonstrating and coaching strategies caregivers can use during everyday activities so learning continues beyond the intervention session.
